HISTORY
Earliest copper usage in world history dates back to 7000 BC on Asia Minor at the Catalhoyuk and Cayonu regions. Copper was the first metal to be refined and one can say metallurgy begins with refining copper ore.
Copper cannot be shaped cold as causes it to fracture. It must be heated then beaten and worked. On the other hand, beating copper when it’s hot is impractical, so it is necessary to allow it cool slightly. This heating and cooling process is called tempering. While copper was used in daily life for centuries, contemporary sources from 13th to 14th century provide evidence that Seljuk Turk craftsmen fashioned objects from precious metals and meals at feasts were served on dishes of gold and silver.
Ottoman craftsmen excelled in the use of copper, silver, gold and brass but worked with gilding as well. Discovered by Greeks 1000BC, the most important characteristic of mercury is its ability to form amalgams with silver and gold…especially the latter. Even in ancient times, this made the metal useful in purifying gold and continued to be used with great success in a gilding technique called tombac, which reached the pinnacle of refinement under the Ottomans.
In the hands of Ottoman craftsmen, metal was made to speak with an elegance resembling the delicacy of lace .The works that they created are among the most precious that have survived to the present day and Kiliza is proud to carry and adopt this art to this day.
Since the earliest times, two principal techniques have been favored in the shaping of metal objects, beating and casting. All of the pieces of Kiliza collection are produced by either of these techniques.
Most of our collection is produced using the technique of beating copper into shape. This demands considerable skill, practice and time. Casting is another ancient technique used more for the production of mortars, braziers, incense burners and candlesticks.
After the creation of the required shape, next step is decorating the object. Decorative techniques employed on our objects include chasing, engraving, hammering relief, molded relief, openwork cutting.
The next and the last step of this long journey is lustring, encrusting, making to look old, and gilding so we can enjoy the finesse of long rooted and rich culture in our lives today.
